Girard Bird is a decorative wooden object designed by Alexander Girard in 1945 as part of his experiments with abstract sculptural forms. Although the bird’s silhouette is reduced to a minimum of simple shapes, it remains instantly recognizable and bears Girard’s characteristic playful yet highly refined style.

The original hand-carved figurine was crafted from apple wood and is now part of the Girard Archive at the Vitra Design Museum. Vitra, in collaboration with Alexander Girard’s family, has reintroduced it into production in a solid maple wood version with a lacquered finish. Thanks to its well-thought-out design, the Girard Bird can be placed on its feet in the traditional way or balanced on its tail.

The Girard Bird serves as a small, standalone piece that adds character, a touch of whimsy, and a nod to postwar American design to any interior. With its simple aesthetic, it fits easily into both minimalist settings and interiors complemented by other design icons.
